Eleni Hasaki

Dr. Eleni  Hasaki

Eleni Hasaki is a Professor of Classics at the Department of Religious Studies and Classics and a Professor of Anthropology at the School of Anthropology. She proudly joins the inaugural 2026 cohort of Cultivating Connection and Belonging Fellows Program. She is  the  co-director of the Laboratory for Traditional Technology, where she has established a Ceramic Artist Residency with extensive research, teaching and outreach projects on Mediterranean potters' communities. Her research focuses on the operational knowledge,  economic strategies, and social networks of industrial communities in ancient Greece and the wider Mediterranean. She is the author and co-editor of three books, as well as numerous journal articles and book chapters. Her work has received funding from major agencies and academic institutions, including NEH and Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies. In 2025-2026 she was a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.

Hasaki has established multiple campus and community partnerships to improve the learning experience of the UArizona students and to promote archaeological research.  Among her wide array of undergraduate and graduate courses, the course Health and Medicine in Classical Antiquity stands out:  is widely crosslisted across several colleges and is part the Honors Health and Human Values Minor and of the BA degree in Medicine. Along with the historical timeline for the topic, the students benefit from guest lectures by health professionals, from the AZ Poison and Drug Information Center, Emergency Medical Services,  Tucson-based veterinarians, faculty physicians in the College of Medicine, to name a few. They also enjoy guided visits in the Coit Museum of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the Campus Arboretum. Hasaki was recently recognized with the University of Arizona's Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentoring Award for her commitment to graduate education in M.A. and Ph.D. programs.
